What is a Lordship?
Have you ever seen Lord or Lady on a list of titles when filling in a form and wondered how it is acquired? Exactly how do you earn the right to use such a noble title? At least once in your life, this question is sure to have run through your mind. Perhaps you’ve even looked at how you would go about buying or acquiring a Lordship but this hasn’t come to fruition.
But what exactly is a Lordship?
A Lordship can have a number of meanings. Traditionally, this term was associated with higher nobles such as Dukes, Marquesses, Viscounts and Earls. To put it simply, anyone with a rank higher than a Sir could be referred to as Lord. In present times, the title Lord is more commonly associated with someone who sits in Parliament as a member of the House of Lords. But regardless of the shift in meaning, it can be agreed that a Lordship has always been associated with power and respect.
How to Become a Lord or Lady
From the definition above, it could be assumed that a Lordship is hard to come by. But rest assured that this doesn’t have to be the case. Traditionally this title was mostly acquired through one of three methods:
- Becoming a member of the House of Lords
- Marrying an existing Lord or Lady and acquiring the title
- Purchasing the land from an existing Lord or Lady and inheriting the title
Let's be honest, the chances of being able to obtain a Lordship with any of these methods are slim. They’re time consuming, costly and involve a lot of ongoing responsibility. But what if it didn’t need to be that complex? What if you could utilise the Lord or Lady title without the lasting hardship and responsibility?
In current times, there is a much easier and more popular way of acquiring one of the Lordship titles and that is by purchasing a small patch of land in Scotland. With patches as small as one square foot in size, this method offers a much easier, much more affordable way to receive a Lordship. Owning this small piece of land allows you to utilise the Scottish Laird title, of which the closest translation in modern English is Lord or Lady.
It’s important to note that this title won’t give you access to the House of Lords and it certainly won’t come with a manor or estate in tow. You’ll simply be purchasing the right to use the Lord or Lady title and a small piece of Scottish land.
