If you are looking for breathtaking landscapes and beautiful hikes, the Isle of Sky is a fantastic place to visit. For an area that is just 639 square miles, it delivers far more landmarks and views than you might think.

In this blog, we’ll discuss some of the Isle of Skye’s areas of natural beauty and tell you why they deserve a visit.

When is Best to Visit The Isle of Skye?

While many travellers opt to visit the Isle of Skye during summer, this isn’t always the best option. At this time of year, the weather is likely warm and pleasant and many of the shops and cafes will be open for business. However, you may find yourself being attacked by midges. If this is a problem for you, the island is just as beautiful in spring and autumn.

If you are planning to climb hills or mountains, be sure to wear plenty of layers as the island can get very windy. For more tips on dressing for changeable Highland weather, take a look at our packing list for the Kingdom of Fife weather.

The Best Places to Visit on The Isle Of Skye

The Quiraing

Whether you decide to drive, cycle or walk it, you’ll have a blast making your way up the Quiraing pass. This is a road that winds itself up a steep hill. Some consider it one of the most scenic routes in Scotland. It is famous for hidden plateaus, jagged rock pinnacles and dramatic cliffs.

There is a large car park just 30 seconds away from the viewpoint, meaning you don’t have to walk or cycle far to enjoy the view. We recommend getting there early to avoid the crowds.

Another 20-minute walk from here takes you to The Quiraing viewpoint, which are east-facing cliffs best viewed at sunrise.

The Old Man of Storr

This is one of Skye's most popular viewpoints. Forming the highest point along the Trotternish Ridge, The Storr is an unusual landscape formed by an ancient landslip. It is globally famous for its dramatic volcanic rock formations, particularly the Old Man of Storr, a massive 60-meter-high basalt pinnacle.

The mountain can be climbed in less than an hour, depending on your hiking speed. Alternatively, there is a large car park near the viewing point. The area can get very busy, so heading up the mountain early is best to beat the crowds.

The Sligachan

Close to the Cuillin mountains, Sligachan is a tiny human settlement. It boasts beautiful views of Black Cuillin mountains. It is also home to the picturesque Sligachan Waterfalls.

For those who opt to visit by car, there is a big carpark just a ten-minute walk away. We recommend bringing your waterproof hiking boots or wellington boots as it can get muddy. You get the best views at sunrise or sunset any time of the year.

The Fairy Pools

These magical crystal clear pools and small waterfalls are located in Glenbrittle. It is set against the backdrop of the imposing Black Cuillin and pinnacle of Sgurr an Fheadain.

Some people opt to wild swim in them but beware the midges in summer! We covered this spot briefly in our roundup of hidden gems in the Scottish Highlands, if you're after more off-the-beaten-path spots nearby.

This popular spot is great at any time of day, but it can get very busy in peak seasons.

Beware of visiting in wet weather as you must cross stepping stones over a river to reach this spot. This becomes impassable in heavy rain.
